Measuring Driveshaft Length & Angles - Guide

How to Measure a Driveshaft

Your driveshaft is what delivers power/torque from your vehicle’s transmission to its wheel axels. If your driveshaft needs to be repaired or replaced, then you’ll likely need to measure driveshaft length to ensure your supplier provides you with the exact shaft you need.

If you still have your driveshaft, then measuring it is easy. Simply bring it to your supplier and they’ll measure it for you.

But, if your vehicle’s driveshaft has been removed or severely damaged, then you will need to manually measure the space under your vehicle where the driveshaft once was. Don’t worry — this isn’t nearly as tough as it sounds and this helpful guide will teach you exactly how to measure driveshaft length.

How to Measure a Four Wheel Drive Driveshaft

If you’re wondering how to measure a drive shaft when the shaft is missing, then you need to measure the distance from the yoke to the transfer case. Here’s how:

  • First, make sure your vehicle’s weight is on the springs.

  • Next, measure from the centerline of the front differential yoke, across to the centerline of the transfer case yoke.

  • Then do the same from the transfer case to the rear differential yoke centerline.

  • Write these measurements down and bring them with you to our shop so that we can provide you with the correct drive shaft.

Measuring Driveshaft Length on a One-Piece Driveshaft

Drive shaft measuring gets easier with a one-piece driveshaft:

  • Start by making sure the weight of your vehicle is on the springs.

  • Now push your transmission yoke all the way into the transmission.

  • Then back it ¾” to 1” (or to desired running position).

  • Now measure from the center of the U-joint cap hole in the slip yoke to the center of where the U-joint fits in the rear-end.

  • Write down these measurements and bring them to our shop for your new drive shaft.

How to Measure a Two-Piece Driveshaft

If you’re wondering how to measure for a drive shaft with two pieces, follow these steps:

  • Begin by putting the weight of the vehicle on its springs.

  • Then push your transmission yoke all the way into the transmission.

  • Next, back it ¾” to 1” (or to your desired running position).

  • Now take your measuring tape and measure from the center of the U-joint cap hole in the slip yoke to the center of where the bearing attaches to the frame.

  • Next, measure from the center of where the center bearing attaches to the frame to the center of the universal joint in the rear end.
