Power Take Off >> Services

technician A PTO (power take-off) is, a gearbox, or mechanical device used to transmit power from the engine, through the transmission to another mechanical or hydraulic device. There are several types of PTOs, the most common is the transmission mounted model, also called a side mount PTO. There is also a bottom-mounted PTO similar to the side mount PTO. PTOs are available in many speed ratios and torque ratings.

A PTO has become a popular device because it is relatively inexpensive, it requires little maintenance, and it is somewhat easy to install. The reasons for the great popularity are availability and its adaptability to most all applications.

The most popular application provides power to the dump truck, or body and hoist. Other applications are wreckers or tow trucks, etc. The list goes on and on.

We use PTOs on trucks to provide auxiliary power for truck-mounted equipment. Since there are other sources of power, we need to understand the reasons PTOs are used. As a substitute for PTOs, a complex combination of levers or electric motors could be used. Even an auxiliary or "pony" engine could be used to power equipment, but the handiest, safest, most reliable, and least expensive method has been a Power Take-Off.
